“TO SERVE, NOT TO BE SERVED.”
These simple but powerful words of AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, help to define the mission of AARP. As a groundbreaking California educator and activist, Dr. Andrus knew about service, founding AARP in 1958 after retiring from a long career as California’s first female high school principal.

Dr. Andrus viewed her life’s mission as helping others while also empowering them to make choices about their own lives. Though she passed away in 1967, Dr. Andrus’ vision guides AARP to this day. Her passion for community engagement, social change, and advocacy are fundamental to all of the work that we do.

Volunteer leadership and service are central to Dr. Andrus’ vision, and on any given day, AARP volunteers and staff are “on the ground” at the State Capitol, representing AARP in forums and behind podiums, and working on behalf of people who are 50 plus in cities and communities across the state. These dedicated individuals engage in everything from providing information, support, and resources to family caregivers, to helping people protect themselves against fraud and improve their financial security, to working with elected officials and local governments to help reduce the cost of prescription drugs, protect Social Security and Medicare, and make our communities more livable for Californians of all ages. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all AARP in-person events are currently suspended; but volunteers and staff are continuing to engage and advocate through virtual platforms and social media channels.

We hope that learning about AARP’s work and mission will inspire you to take a closer look at what we do and consider joining us in our top volunteer leadership role, advancing Dr. Andrus’ vision of public service by applying to be our next State President.

Application deadline is January 15, 2021 (11:59 p.m. PT)
