AARP Hawaii Neighbor Talks
Introduction to Tae Kwon Do(8-part online series)
This Tae Kwon Do series will introduce the student to a more active exercise discipline that builds on skills obtained from the mind management through biofeedback breathing series and the Introduction to Tai Chi class although these are not prerequisites. Like Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do is based on martial arts. However, this Introduction to Tae Kwon Do class series emphasizes the use of the trunk and large leg muscles in a variety of kicks [front, over, side, hook and roundhouse] as the foundation for exercise, strength building, maintaining flexibility, body awareness, and stress management – all important attributes as we mature to support high quality of life. This class series will begin presenting Tae Kwon Do as a low impact exercise with stabilizing aids [e.g., wall, chair, cane]. As the class progresses more mobile techniques will be taught and eventually without stabilizing aids. The classes will begin with stretching followed by the subunits of the 8 weekly classes: Basic kicks with support, Basic turning kicks with support, Kicking without support, Sliding kicks, Jumping kicks, Combinations and fakes, Stances and blocks, culminating with Basic form.
Requirements: Ability to stand, and move legs, arms and body. A chair or cane may be used for stability. Each student will need to develop the sense to work within their limits of capabilities for their own well-being and safety.

About AARP Hawaii Neighbor Talks: Your friends and neighbors have interests and talents you may not even know about! The AARP Hawaii Neighbor Talks program highlights these talents through talks and demonstrations led by AARP volunteers and partners in your community. There is much we can learn from one another!
About the Instructor: Kenneth G.W. Inn has been practicing and teaching Tae Kwon Do techniques for over 30 years. He retired from a Federal laboratory near Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for the creation of the nation’s environmental radionuclide measurement standards with expectations of highest confidence, accuracy and precision for certified values. He finds Tai Kwon Do exercise helps with managing stress and can report that it can produce significant results – some days he just needed to go kick something and let it all out! He has also enjoyed the healing camaraderie of taking classes with other practitioners, and the cognitive challenge to continue to learn and improve his skill level.
